TITLE / Slow Bullets
ARTIST / TONDA TRIO

BULLJUN from El Barrio NY + KIYOSHI TONDA from A.Y.B. force + DAISUKE NAKAI engineer & multi player = TONDA TORIO!!
The new unit, TONDA TORIO, is uniformed by the 3 people above.
KIYOSHI TONDA leads the unit, who had been involved in every single project from the days of "Abnormal Yellow Band" and the former unit "DJ Lark & Funk Messengers". Of course, "Lost Breaks" and "Bulljun & El Barrio 2016" to name a few in recent works.
Numerous rare vinyls were dug out from some record shops in US by BULLJUN. They are restored by TONDA using his AKAI MPC2000 and E-MU SP 1200, then NAKAI arranges them with lyrical guitar to give a hint of nostalgia.
A total of 13 songs, TONDA TORIO describes it as "Mellow & Slow Bullet". It is 250% down tempo and has touch of healing that distinguishes it from daily party groove, but still retains their essence of bold and strong drum beat. It is, so to speak, the groove of Saudade.
Their sound may be referred to as "adult school” which will be filtered into the heart of grown up B-Boy and B- Girl as well...

In the late 90’s, A.Y.B.
Force was born out of a small record shop in Kyoto
Japan. Out of this group came the neophyte upstart,
Bulljun.
His first solo foray, Bulljun & El Barrio 2016,
is neither Jazzanova nor West London Style but refreshingly
organic in it’s approach. Even though the album
strays from his normal conventions, it is still very
much Break Beat. Bulljun boldly combines carefully
selected samples with sensitive beat phrases to make
one of the hottest break beat albums ever.
Bulljun & El Barrio 2016 is the essence of hip
hop music and Bulljun is one of a few who can deliver
product with roots this strong in the genre, and
it’s no wonder. Soon after graduating high
school, he moved to New York from Japan and lived
in the back of a record shop. It was here that
his love for urban music marinated and grew strong.
His sound is reminiscent of early
Pharcyde, both moody and energetic. However, the
most impressive aspect of it is the sense of analogue
maintained by keeping the melodies mainly in the
middle to low sound range. Many DJ’s manage to duplicate
this sound by careful sampling but his method maintains
an original beat sensation right down to the whip
of the finger marks. A nod to the originators
of the craft is evident but whatever it may be called,
the bloodline of hip hop culture runs strong in Bulljuns’ work.
No one can deny the importance of that. Especially
in light of the commercialism that’s plagued
a genre so rich in urban culture. |
